The Alexandra Theatre was opened in 1887 and operated as a melodrama theatre. In 1907 it went over to presenting high class vaudeville with Bioscope films. It became a full-time cinema in July 1916 and was renamed Alexandra Picture House.

It returned to live theatre use in the mid-1920’s and reverted back to its original Alexandra Theatre name. Around 1930 it was equipped with a Western Electric sound system and became a cinema once more. It was damaged by a fire on 29th December 1948. The remains were then used as a factory until 1978 when it was demolished.
