The Evans Theatre opened in April 1935 by John Harkley (the owner of the Ozark Amusement Company) and Mrs. Margaret F. Harkley featuring installations of Simplex projections in a fireproof projection booth. Right after the first four years went through, the couple who operated the theater went virtually broke after financing their own project. According to their statement, the couple received a reserve of $4.35 on grand opening day.
The husband-and-wife team of C.E. McLendon would later take over operations of the Evans Theatre, and in June 1947, the theatre was renamed Dixie Theatre. It was still open in 1952, but had closed by 1955.
