The 8ft high steel sculpture outside the Everyman’s entrance is ‘The Ballad of Sophia’. Created by Ray Lonsdale, at a cost of £85,000, it depicts a warden with Sophia Constable, the youngest female inmate incarcerated in Treadmills prison. She was jailed at the age of 11 for stealing a loaf of bread. The statue was funded by North Yorkshire Council and Historic England’s cultural programme, as part of the Northallerton High Street Heritage Action Zone.
