The April 11, 1953 Motion Picture Herald wrote that Carlton Futch had finished a 400-car drive-in at El Dorado, Ark. On May 30, the magazine reported, “A new 485-car super drive-in held its formal opening last week at El Dorado, Ark. Carson J. Futch, owner, reported the Gay Drive-In was off to a big start.”
The Gay Drive-In appeared in the 1955-56 Theatre Catalog, address Highway 167, Exec: C. J. Futch, car capacity: 420.
A 1956 aerial photo showed a drive-in theater about 2.5 miles south of El Dorado on the east side of US 167. By 1976, its screen was gone and a racing oval had been installed. (Summer 1965 issues of the El Dorado Times included advertisements for the 7 and Sky-Vue drive-ins, but not the Gay Drive-In.) An industrial services company occupies the site today.
