Manos Quality Theatres Enterprises Co. launched a multiplex in Bluefield, West Virginia’s new Mercer Mall that had launched in October 1980. The five-plex opened six months after the Mall’s debut on April 19, 1981 with “The Howling”, “Caveman”, “Amy”, “Excalibur” and “Nighthawks”. When asked about the quality of the 1,300 seats in the auditoriums, Manos reported that the seats were “sturdy.” Most reports stated that the mall was an interior property and, most likely, sturdy.
Manos then opened what was hopefully a much more comfortable and modern 1,800-seat 8-plex. Known at opening as the Mercer Mall Cinemas 8, it was an outparcel building to the Mercer Mall launching on November 16 1990 replacing the five-plex. The 8-plex would be purchased by Carmike Theatres who bought out the 1912-founded circuit started by Michael Manos - then operated by Ted Manos. The venue became the Carmike Cinemas 8.
In 2016, AMC bought the 1968-founded circuit started by C.L. Patrick and named after sons Carl and Mike (CarMike / Carmike). AMC rebranded the exterior building as the AMC Classic Bluefield 8 on March 1, 2017 operating it for six years under that name before closing on February 26, 2023 (it has its own Cinema Treasure listing).
