The Village Mall was a tiny, regional shopping mall announced in January of 1970 by the Kettler Brothers. The center would be completed in phases with the first core of 18 stores opening in late-1970. The Montgomery Village Plaza (aka Village Mall and Village Mall Shopping Center) added 16 stores including a theater and an events space in 1975.
The Village Mall Cinemas 3 opened on July 30, 1975 with Ellen Burstyn in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, Mark Slade in “Salty” & Ernest Borgnine in “The Devil’s Rain”. The Village Mall was completely dwarfed by the Lakeforest Mall’s opening across the street in 1978. Seating was provided for 720, with 240-seats in each auditorium. It was remodeled in 1985 and in 1995 it was taken over by P & G Theaters in August 1991. It was still open in 1999, but the Village Mall Cinemas 3 was an early casualty in the complex and was replaced by a local church. The Village Mall would later be converted to an all outdoor strip called the Village Shopping Center.
Across the way, the Lakeforest Mall would add a five-plex cinema in 1984 which has its own Cinema Treasures entry. The Lakeforest would continue until closure in 2023 with demolition in 2024 while the strip center that once housed the triplex continuing in the 2020’s as the Montgomery Village Plaza.
