J.A. Smith opened the Edwight Theatre in the coal mining town of Edwight, WV in the early-1920’s just after the creation of its post office in 1920. Smith also operated the Glen Rogers Theatre in Glen Rogers, WV. The theatre closed in 1932 without converting to sound. In 1935, the Edwight Theatre reopened now wired for sound.
In February of 1937, the venue was closed temporarily due to an epidemic of scarlet fever and spinal meningitis, as well as a flu outbreak. The town’s coal mine shut down with most of the resources stripped away in 1957 taking most of the town, the population and theatre with it over the next year. The town made a theatre-less comeback in the 1970’s for lumber until it had clear-cut all of its lumber resources. The town became more or less a ghost town thereafter.
