John W. and Loula “Lulu” T. Williams were Tulsa business operators who had a successful confectionery and car repair garage when they built their first Dreamland Theatre in the Greenwood District of Tulsa for African American patrons in 1914. The Williams launched two more Dreamlands - Dreamland #2 in Muskogee in 1918 and #3 in Okmulgee.
Things took a major turn for the worse when the Greenwood District including the Dreamland Theatre was burned on May 31 to June 1, 1921 during the Tulsa Race Massacre. The rebuilding of that venue took a mental and financial toll on the Williams. And the Muskogee Dreamland went into receivership during the latter stages of the Tulsa rebuilding project in April 3, 1922. The property was auctioned off and apparently reopened under new management. When the neighboring Jones building suffered a fire that October in 1922, the Dreamland Theatre was damaged by the blaze. It’s not clear if the theatre reopened.
