1915 Sanborn Map

Opened as the Ritz Theatre, a storefront theatre that seated 615 on one floor. In 1927 it was equipped with a Kilgen organ. Film Daily Year Book shows the Ritz Theatre closed in 1931 and 1932. In June 1933 Bikos Brothers and Paul Miller formed Central Theater Corp. In November the theatre reopened as the Central Theatre. FDYB shows that it was closed by 1939, probably coincident with 1938 opening of the Bikos’s Indiana Theatre at 1112 Broadway.

According to the 1918-1919 City Directory, the theater at 1238 Broadway was the Gem Theatre. Its proprietor was Aristides Vaichis. It was still listed as the Gem Theatre in the 1922 City Directory.

There were other Gem theaters at 622 and 722 Broadway that have their own CT entry.
