The Moskino Sputnik Cinema was located in the Lefortovo area of Moscow, home to the famous Lefortovo Prison which was located a couple of blocks away, and opened its doors in 1958. The theater got its name in honor of the first artificial Earth satellite, that was launched into orbit in October 1957.
From its start and into the 1960’s, the theater features novelties from foreign and Russian film distribution, including screenings in the original language with Russian subtitles including first-run American films. The lobby features an exhibition of Soviet film projectors dating from the 1950’s and 1980’s, which as of 2022 was still running 35mm films to this very day. In the late-1990’s, Kinoteatr Sputnik was the first Moscow theater to show foreign films in their original language.
The Kinoteatr Sputnik was a twin with 238 seats at Screen 1 and a whopping 40 seats at Screen 2, bringing a total to 278 seats, and both 2D and 3D formatted films were represented including a possibility of audio commentary and demonstration of films with closed special subtitles for viewers with hearing and vision disabilities as special equipment was provided upon request.
