The American Theatre opened on September 1, 1921. Although trade journal announcements said the house seated 600, it was never listed in Film Daily’s Year Books with more than 400, and in its later years was listed with only 375. It was still listed in 1950, though it had a newer competitor, the R Theatre, from 1947.
