Regent Cinema

In Redcar, North Yorkshire, a £9.6m project, funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority, saw the demolition of the Regent Cinema (that had closed in April 2018 due to structural problems: see separate Cinema Treasures entry) and the construction of a replacement cinema.

The new Regent Cinema is a three-storey “Art Deco-style” cinema building which council leader Mary Lanigan described as “stunning” and “unique”. It includes a licensed bar with sea views and an events space for public use.

It was announced that nine potential operators had submitted bids as part of a tendering process overseen by Redcar and Cleveland Council. In August 2022 the council reached an agreement with Merlin Cinemas.

There was a last-minute delay when Merlin Cinemas said there was not enough space to sell snacks, but that was swiftly remedied, and the Regent Cinema opened on Friday 21st October 2022.

Among the opening films were children’s favourite “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” and the DC superhero action adventure “Black Adam”, starring The Rock.

Seating capacities are: Screen 1:91, Screen 2:31 and Screen 3:54
