Celebrating its formal grand opening November 25, 1960, the Nu-Vu Theatre was built by the Box Elder Development Corporation, which was formed to improve Main Street. The Tremonton Leader noted a local citizen won a $50 savings bond in a contest to suggest a name for the theatre.
Manager John Newton said they would only show movies with the Parents Magazine “Stamp of Approval” and would be shown shortly after their run in Salt Lake City. The first movie, “Sunrise at Campobello”, staring Ralph Bellamy and Greer Garson had finished its run in Salt Lake at the Capitol Theatre on November 16. From the advertisements in the Leader, the Nu-Vu had an informal opening in October with Vincent Price in “Fall of the House of Usher”.
One of the highlights of the 460-seat theatre, with a 40-foot-wide screen, was a $4,800 stereo sound system ($45,519 in 2022).
Surrounded by a row of new businesses, it gave Tremontons a new theatre as a replacement for the Liberty Theatre, which was demolished by fire in January 1958. The Nu Vu Theatre was still advertised in the Leader well into 1976.
The Nu Vu was more of a family theatre compared to Main Theatre in Garland (2.3 miles away), which was owned by Otto Jorgenson of the old Liberty Theatre. A week after the Nu Vu Theatre opened the Main Theatre showed Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, hardly Parents Magazine “Stamp of Approval” material.
