The Village Center at Martin Downs was apparently a godsend of a shopping center created in 1985 to prevent locals from having to cross the Palm City Bridge to do their banking and to see a movie. The Center launched in July of 1985 with the four-screen Martin Downs Village Theaters opening on July 3, 1985. Other attractions included a Publix Grocery Store, a Walgreen’s, two banks, and a neighboring Burger King.
The Treasure Coast venue was renamed as the Payless Theatres at Martin Downs beginning June 26, 1992 likely on a ten-year subleasing agreement. The theater was taken on by the fledgling Zota Theaters Inc. Circuit beginning in December of 2002. For three years until December of 2005, the venue went by the name of Palm City 4 Cinemas. From December of 2005 until closure it went by the name of the Palm City Cinemas.
Zota closed the venue on April 12, 2007 with “Blades of Glory", “The Last Minzy", “TMNT" and “Wild Hogs". The theatre remained vacant until the city council approved of its demolition in June of 2012 along with the neighboring Burger King in favor of a Chase Bank location.
