Located in the Te Aro district in the south of the city centre between Dixon Street and Manners Street (the address given here is approximate). The Academy Theatre was a conversion of the 3rd floor of McKenzie’s Department Store. The architectural firm for the conversion were Warren & Mahoney Architects of Christchurch. It was part of the Masters Christchurch chain of arthouse cinemas.

It was closed on 26th August 1985 with the Philippines film “Strangers in Paradise” starring Snooky Serna. The building has since been demolished.

The Academy was on the middle floor of the former McKenzies building but closed because the landlord leased the top floor above them to a Les Mills Gym and the aerobics music and people dropping weights on the floor drowned out the movie soundtrack. I remember Dolly Parton 9-to-5 was one of the worst offenders.
