Located in a former restaurant. The Gem Theatre was opened in December 1908. On January 21, 1909 the Gem Theatre operation was moved to 722 Broadway (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) and it reverted back to restaurant use.
By 1914 it had opened as the Art Theatre. It was the first theatre in Gary to be equipped with an organ. It had closed by 1926. Later going into retail use, the roofless shell of the building still stood in 2022. It had been demolished by March 2024.

The Art was at 620 Broadway. It was initially operated by V.U. Young and C.J. Wolf. Young and Wolf owned several inter-related companies that in turn owned and or operated theaters. In September 1920 A.B. Marcus sold the Art to Julius Nussau.
In early 1922 Walter Eschenbach re-opened the 300-seat Art. It was managed by Charles Mazzone.
This theater has been demolished.
The 1908 Sanborn shows a restaurant in the building at 620/622 Broadway. But in December 1908 and January 1909 the Gem Theatre was advertising at 622 Broadway. The Gem Theatre moved to the Beehive building at 722 Broadway by January 21, 1909. (A May 1909 article said that the theater had been in existence for over a year.) Sanborn again showed a restaurant at 620/622 in 1911. By 1914, the building was home to the Art Theatre.
