Picture House

The Picture House at the corner of Westgate Road and Clayton Street was opened on 12th February 1912 with 850-seats. It was operated by the Newcastle Cinematograph Company and was often referred to as the Cinematograph Picture House. It was extended in November 1914 to increase the seating capacity to 1,021-seats and the addition of a tea lounge and a smokers' lounge and reopened as the Westgate Road Picture House.

In 1919 it was taken over by the Consolidated Cinematograph Theatres(CCT) circuit and new entrance with marble columns was added. It was closed on 5th March 1927 and was demolished to build the larger New Westgate Picture House (today the 02 Academy which has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
