In Banbury, Oxfordshire, the opening of the Castle Centre shopping centre in 1974 is commemorated by a stone plaque on the façade of the Corn Exchange in the Market Place. That has since been rebranded as the Castle Quay Shopping Centre, due to its location alongside the Oxford Canal. It is home to over 100 stores, while Banbury Museum is accessed over a bridge over the canal.
Constructed on land across the canal from the existing Centre, the Castle Quay Waterfront leisure and restaurant development aimed “to transform Castle Quay into a canal-side experience-led destination”. The first phase was completed in 2021 with the opening of a Lidl supermarket and a Premier Inn hotel.
The second phase consists of a 55,000sqft, three-storey entertainment centre containing a 10-lane bowling alley, a games arcade, Adventure Climb (a 10m high climbing centre), interactive darts, a karaoke room, American pool tables and restaurants and bars.
The centre is also home to a Light Cinemas multiplex. Originally scheduled to open at Easter 2022, this was initially delayed until Friday 27th May 2022, when it had hoped to open for the half term holidays. However, due to what the company described as “ongoing supplier chain issues”, the opening was pushed back to Friday 10th June 2022.
The opening films that day were “Jurassic World: Dominion”, “Downton Abbey: A New Era”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Operation Mincemeat” and “Sonic the Hedgehog”.
Seating capacities are Screen 1:141, 2:52, 3:115, 4:115, 5:65, 6:121 and 7:52.
