The Royal Theatre’s opening date has not yet to be found, but opened during World War I. It was first operated by F.C. Inhelder until July 1, 1916 when it was taken over by two brothers simply known as the Brisben Brothers.
The Royal Theatre was notable on March 28, 1929 for being the first small town between Omaha and Norfolk to have the installation of sound with Vitaphone. After installation with a partial shipping delay, the Royal Theatre ran its first talkie, Fanny Brice in “My Man” (with no short subjects), on April 7, 1929.
Despite the city of Wisner having a populated town of 1,000, it was a first-run theatre for the area. The Royal Theatre continued running successfully throughout World War II and into the Korean War era.
CinemaScope which have a huge role on installation at the nearby Y-Knot Drive-In in West Point on August 15, 1954 with Richard Burton in “The Robe” got the attention on the area’s first CinemaScope features nearly 25 miles away from Wisner. CinemaScope arrived at Wisner pretty late, which would later be installed at the Royal Theatre on February 24, 1955, with Clyde Beatty in “Ring Of Fear” being the first CinemaScope feature.
The Royal Theatre continued to operate into the late-1960’s, but the closing date hasn’t been found yet.
