Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre was opened by M.S. Jeffries on March 21, 1918, with the film “Tom Sawyer”, starring Jack Pickford. The Moving Picture World reported it was taking the place of the Strand Theatre, which burned some time ago. The Columbia County Historical Society says It was constructed with hollow tile to make it completely. Fireproof. As with all theatres it was closed for a month in October 1918 by the Board of Health because of the influenza epidemic.

The Historical Society notes G.O. Garrison, who also owned the Columbia Theatre across the street, later purchased the 425-seat Liberty Theatre and continued to operate it until December 1930.

The building, located on the then named Columbia Street, later served as a bowling alley, union hall and Shrine Club before being demolished in the late-1970s or early-1980’s.

According to Sanborn Maps and the St. Helens Mist, the Liberty Theatre was at the back of the Rutherford Building with a narrow passageway leading to the to the theatre at the back.

Uploaded partial image ads for the Liberty which appear on the Facebook page of the Columbia County Historical Society and Museum Association and a page from the March 22, 1918 St. Helens Mist on which an ad for the Liberty appears together with one for a Gem Theatre. Need to research whether that was in Saint Helens or in an adjacent community.
