The Gull Theatre was the replacement venue for the twice burned Gem Theaters in Winthrop. Located off Union Street up a narrow alley behind a bar. The Gull Theatre launched in October of 1945 and lasted until the early-1960’s. Royal E. Hammell launched the Gull Theatre following the loss of the town’s second Gem Theatre on January 17, 1944. Gem Theatre operator Edward Desjardins suffered a previous loss of Gem Theatre #1 in a projection room explosion on October 6, 1938.
The Gull Theatre suffered from poor clearances and sued the movie studios to attempt to get newer and stronger films. In 1954, under new operators, the theatre was equipped with widescreen technology to present CinemaScope titles. The final listing for the Gull Theatre was October 28, 1961 with Claudette Colbert in “Parrish”. The Winthrop Lanes moved in during a retrofit offering candlepin bowling thereafter.
