Flying Cloud Drive-In

The Flying Cloud Drive-In was a single-screen drive-in, along (then) Highway 212 (across the road from Flying Cloud Airport) in Eden Prairie. It was opened on August 11, 1956 with Jeff Chandler in “Toy Tiger”.

It was in operation during 1966, based on a newspaper advertisement for the movie “Fireball 500”, listing local theatres showing the movie, including the Flying Cloud Drive-In. The Flying Cloud Drive-In was closed on April 30, 1989 with Bette Midler in “Beaches”.

The site today is an Eden Prairie municipal yard waste drop off site.

Part of the entrance road is all that remains of the drive in.

The Flying Cloud’s last ads in the Minneapolis Star Tribune were on the weekend of April 29, 1989. The following week, the drive-in ad section did not include it.

The May 17, 1989, issue of the Eden Prairie News reported, “The Flying Cloud Drive-In Theatre may soon be replaced by a garbage recycling facility to be built and owned by Browning-Ferris Industries Inc.” BFI bought the drive-in site from Eden Amusement Co. earlier that month.

There is a large concrete block that sits on the old entrance road. At first, I thought it might be part of the old ticket booth.

But if that is true, someone would’ve had to move it up the road a distance before leaving it there.
