In Edinburgh, the St. James Centre was opened in 1973. The Brutalist architecture of the government offices on the top level made it one of Edinburgh’s most unloved buildings, but the shopping centre proved very popular.
In October 2016 the Centre closed, and was demolished. It was replaced by a new shopping and leisure centre, St James Quarter, which opened its first phase on 24th June 2021.
On Saturday 2nd April 2022 an Everyman cinema opened on the top level. There are five auditoriums (plus the usual bar facilities): Screen 1:161 seats; Screen 2:87; Screen 3:69; Screen 4:42 and Screen 5:48.
Screen 1 has NEC 2K projection, while the others have NEC laser projection. All have Dolby 7.1 digital sound. Screen 4 is also equipped for RealD 3D.
The opening films were children’s animated adventures “The Bad Guys” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, Marvel Comics' “Morbius”, dramas “The Worst Person in the World” and “Ambulance”, “The Batman”, starring Robert Pattinson, comedy drama “The Phantom of the Open” and horror thriller “X”.
