Empire Theatre

The Empire Theatre appears on the 1913 Sanborn in a storefront that occupied the eastern third of the Caverly Block.

The building was a two-story brick structure built sometime between 1886 and 1893. The 1907 map shows the space as a billiard hall.

The theatre would have been fairly cramped, and it closed in 1934, prior to the 1939 opening of the larger State Theatre (later Stark Theatre) across the street, which would have doomed it. The 1939 map shows a store located here.

The building survives today, with a really unattractive new ground floor. The theatre location is now a gun store.

Note that while the theater was operating, the address was 106. This was changed sometime after 1939.
