The Heard Opera House (or simply known as “Herald’s Opera House”) opened its doors in the middle of December of 1884. It was McKinney’s first showplace featuring a mix of special events, candidates, and live presentations featured in a red velvet panelling stage with a bore on the Lone Star.
The Heard Opera House went through a few name changes. First the McKinney Opera House in 1909, followed by just simply plain “Opera House” shortly afterward according to various pages from the Courtier-Gazette.
The house was last operated by Jesse Warden, and closed for the final time on March 28, 1910 after the upper deck of the Opera House was devastated in a fire.
However, on November 22, 1910, Warden originally had plans to rebuild the Opera House but was scrapped later on in 1911.
The upper floor was now part of the city’s Grand Hotel and Ballroom.
