The original Theatre Royal in Aldershot was located at the northern corner of Union Street and Grosvenor Road. It opened in 1856 and was destroyed by fire on 8th February 1889.
This second Theatre Royal on Gordon Road between Birchett Road and Elms Road was designed by noted theatre architects Bertie Crewe and W.G.R. Sprague, opening in 1891. It was reconstructed, reopening on 15th October 1900 with a production of the play “The Private Secretary”. By the mid-1900’s it was screening films and had several names. By 1927 it was operated by the Kingshot Syndicate Ltd. screening films.
In the 1930’s the theatre went bankrupt. By 1940 it had reopened as a variety theatre, returning to the Theatre Royal name. In 1946 it became a repertory theatre. It was closed in January 1953. In 1955 a fire back-stage damaged the vacant building and it was demolished in 1959.
A block of flats named Matinee House now stand on the site.
