December 7th, 1984 grand opening ad in photo section.

By the way, couldn’t help but notice that great big transmission tower in the middle of Kenrick Plaza, near the movie theater. Who’s tower is that? I’m assuming it has to be a TV station, but some radio stations have big towers, too. Anyone know?
Those photos are depressing, Chuck…well, any closed theater is depressing. This looks a lot like the Halls Ferry 14 after it closed and before it was torn down. Wonder if Wehrenberg is using the building for storage of old equipment, like they did with the Halls Ferry?
Two of the auditoriums were converted to stadium seating and these opened in November 1996.
According to rumors, Walmart is thinking about building onto this site.
Theatre opened December 7, 1984 with a total of 2468 seats. The breakdown was two of 200 seats; two of 240 seats; and the remainder seating 288, 310, 450 and 540 respectively.
Any news as to what the building or site will be transformed into since it’s no longer a movie theater? God knows Wehrenberg would never revamp. If they were to do anything to it (not bloody likely) then they’d rebuild it into a 20+ screened theater. Go to hell Wehrenberg! Why can’t you just die and let AMC takeover?
Needy, one got the feeling when one noticed the feel of the venue.
Maintenance obviously had been cut back; the energy level of the help slipped some notches; and, most telling of all, the Wehrenberg main office was somewhat evasive when asked about Kenrick.
This was one of the few Wehrenberg theatres with THX sound.
JAlex, how did you guess that Wehrenberg was about to pull the plug on this one before they did it? I knew it would happen soon enough — it was one of the smallest theaters Wehrenberg had left and Wehrenberg believes the bigger-the better.
Indeed, and I remember the hardcore of Wehrenberg…the Cinderella, Melba, Virginia, and Michigan. Somehow, the loss of Kenrick doesn’t quite compare.
WHAT! This is now closed? Leave it to Wehrenberg to destroy the joys of cinemas. They care too much about these huge multiplexes and they let these smaller theaters suffer. I’ve seen them destroy their way through hundreds of great theaters just because they feel “the bigger the better.” This theater didn’t attract the millions of teens like Ronnie’s does. I now realize that Wehrenberg only believes audiences today are teens.

As expected, Wehrenrenberg pulled the plug on this minor player in its chair with only 8 screens.
Last day of operation was November 25, 2007.
Year of opening was 1984. Not in the city, but in Shrewsbury. Zip code is wrong.
Venue no longer a “sheer joy”…Wehrenberg seems to be ready to pull out of their lease.
I believe this theater actually opened in 1989 or 1990. Also, it’s not in the St. Louis City limits but it’s close. It’s actually in Shrewsbury, on Watson Road, between Laclede Station Road and MacKenzie Road, before you cross the River Des Peres.
