Built on the north side of the piazza on the Corn Market in Worcester. The Public Hall opened as a Music Hall by 1867 when Charles Dicken appeared in person to read “A Christmas Carol”. For many years the building had many uses, including as a lyric hall. Other famous poets and authors did readings throughout the 1860’s and 1870’s. Local composer Sir Edward Elgar also premiered his latest compositions there. John Phillip Souza appeared with his band and Jenny Lind sang on another occasion. The Bijou Minstrels with General Tom Thumb were another act to play the theatre. The Evans family of the Apollo Cinema (see other Cinema Treasures entry) showed films in the Hall during the Great War of 1914-1918.
During World War II, the Public Hall operated as the British Restaurant. After World War II, the building was re-named the Majestic Theatre, again hosting films and theatre. By the 1960’s the Hall fell into disuse and was eventually demolished in 1966, as part of the City’s “slum clearance”. Where the building stood is now a car park.
