The Grand Cinema was built over the adjacent to the Grand-Vu Drive-In, which was still operational during and after construction and opening.
The 275-seat Grand Cinema’s building is a cinder-block structure, finished in Spanish motif, and houses only one-single screen for the most part. The Grand Cinema had its opening in the middle of September 1976 with the announcement of the 1974 film “The Towering Inferno” being its first film according to the Times-Independent of Moab.
The Grand Cinema became the only dominant theatre in Moab after the Grand-Vu Drive-In closed for the final time on October 17, 1985 with a 6-day run of “Goonies” as its last attraction, but the Grand-Vu’s adjacent stood still for a while after closure.
The Grand Cinema not only just displays first-run attractions but for special events as well, including a Republican County Convention Center on May 16, 1988 in the rise of that year’s elections.
When the late-1980’s rolled along, the theatre was slowly losing its strength, but right when 1990 rolled along, the theatre closed for the final time.
