Alamo Theatre

The Fox Theatre appears to have opened in 1921 by Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Houston. The theatre was sold to the K&D Circuit which changed to a Universal Studios film contract in 1926 which may or may not have precipitated a name change (if not a move) to the Alamo Theatre. The Alamo Theatre changed to Vitaphone disc sound beginning on February 12, 1930 with Joe E. Brown in “On With The Show” supported by a Ben Pollack musical short subject, “Song of the Island”.

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Sells took on the theatre but it was destroyed by a tornado on April 10, 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Sells rebuilt the new Alamo Theatre reopening with Esther Williams in “Fiesta” on December 22, 1947. It has its own Cinema Treasure page but, spoiler alert, it was destroyed by fire on April 4th, 1953.

I’ve uploaded two photos showing the remains of the Alamo after the 1947 Tornado destroyed most of Higgins.
