Wesley Shean opened the new Seymour Theatre on April 2, 1934 with Lee Tracy in “Washington’s Merry-Go-Round.” The theatre’s weaknesses were its slope - not ideal for vantage points for patron - and ventilation. Assessing these weaknesses, new owner George W. Owen, whose movie and vaudeville career started in 1907, took on that theatre in 1940 and decided to build an entirely new theatre.
Ground was broken in December of 1940 for Owen’s new building. As it approached completion, the Seymour Theatre completed its run with Charlie Chaplin in “The Great Dictator” on June 2 & 3, 1941. The new theatre opened as the new Owen Theatre at Seymour launching June 6, 1941.
