Harold Owen had operated three drive-ins in the area. The first attempt was in the Goodhope township running for five seasons from 1950 to 1954 (which has its own page on Cinema Treasures). For the 1955 season, he moved the equipment here to Mansfield, Missouri beginning on July 10, 1955 with Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront”. The Owen Drive-In was located on Highway 5 just two miles north of town. Only in its second season, the theatre closed permanently there after the September 10, 1956 double-feature of “Teenage Crime Wave” and “Texas Jamboree”.

The operators said that they were closing because of ill health and “inability to get help.” The Drive-In was offered for sale or for a trade of livestock… “or what have-you.” Apparently that wasn’t much and the venue did not appear to reopen in Mansfield. However, the long running next Owen Drive-In found in Seymour would prove much more successful running from 1961 to 2013 and has its own Cinema Treasure entry.
