Pan Am Twin Drive-In

The Pan Am Twin Drive-in opened June 30, 1971, as ABC Interstate’s 85th theater. Located up University Drive from Pan American University, the opening address was Highway 107 and Sugar Road.

Attending the opening was ABC Interstate president, William E. Mitchell, who got his start with Interstate in 1941 under founder Karl Hoblitzelle.

The opening attractions of the 1,000-car theater were John Wayne in “Big Jake” and Vincent Price in “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”.

The McAllen Monitor noted Tom Paukin was the engineer and construction was carried out by the M.L. Montgomery Company, builders of over 150 drive-ins in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The Pan Am Drive-In is listed in International Motion Picture Almanac 1983 as operated by Plitt South.

Walmart occupies the site today.

The Walmart opened at the drive-in site in October 1991 as a replacement of their 2412 US Highway 281 Business South location that had been operating since November 3, 1981. It expanded to Supercenter on November 4, 1992.
