Manager Fred Anderson of the Orpheum Theatre decided to discontinue usage of the Orpheum Theatre in 1930 to better present talking pictures. He did so by creating the Joyo Theatre in downtown Coleridge, Nebraska. The Joyo Theatre opened July 25, 1930 with the Orpheum Theatre closing on July 13, 1930. The Orpheum Theatre’s last showing was Bessie Love in “Chasing Rainbows” (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The Joyo Theatre was a talkie venue opening with Ramon Novarro in “In Gay Madrid” on July 25, 1930. In 1934, Minerva Robertson began operating the theatre with daughters Grace and Betty. At its 20th anniversary, it received a new paint color scheme of light blue and maroon in an updating. On March 31, 1955, the theatre closed to install a giant curved widescreen to present CinemaScope titles beginning on April 10, 1955 with Richard Burton in “The Robe.”
Minerva Robertson closed the theatre on January 1, 1959 due to declining patronage. The marquee was removed in 1961. The building was closed for a major renovation that saw it become the Coleridge Laundromat opening in 1963.
