Vue Glasgow St Enoch

St. Enoch Centre, a shopping mall in the Merchant City district of Glasgow city centre, opened to the public on 25th May 1989. Located on the site of the former St. Enoch Station, it was designed by GMW Architects.

While it has apparently been the target of many architectural critics, the centre is notable for its massive glass roof, which makes it the largest glass-covered enclosed area in Europe. Not only does this substantially reduce heating and lighting loads – the mall area is lit entirely by natural daylight in summer, whilst the solar heat generated by the roof means that mechanical heating is only required for a week on average per year – it has also earned the building its affectionate nickname “The Glasgow Greenhouse”.

The centre originally included an ice rink, but that was closed in 1999, when a refurbishment programme (initiated to compete with the newer Buchanan Galleries complex) saw it being replaced by more shops and an enlarged restaurant area.

In October 2020, as part of a further £40m refurbishment, work began to redevelop the former BHS department store into a new multiplex cinema, with Vue signing a 20 year lease.

It had been hoped that the Vue cinema would be able to open on 17th May 2021, but further restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the opening being delayed until Saturday 5th June 2021, when restrictions were lifted across the entertainment sector. Among the opening films were the horror sequel “A Quiet Place Part II” and children’s adventure “Peter Rabbit 2”.

Seating capacities are: Screen 1:144, Screen 2:108, Screen 3:85, Screen 4:49, Screen 5:47, Screen 6:64, Screen 7:64, Screen 8:47 and Screen 9:47. All screens are fitted with Sony 4K digital projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound and recliner seats. Three are also equipped for 3D presentations.
