The Omni Theater, with an 80-foot screen, opened April 17, 1983, in the Museum of Science and History.

Drawing about 1.1 million visitors a year, a 1994 remodeling added a Quiet Room for families with babies and increased seating from 356 to 390.

In November 2005 the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported the theater was upgraded to show full length Hollywood films, the first being “Polar Express”.

The museum building itself, built in 1954, was torn down in 2007 and opened In 2009 with a design by Ricardo and Victor Legorreta. The Star-Telegram reported the Omni Theater remained in place and open during construction.

Owing to Covid 19, the Omni was closed from March to August 2020 and again since December 2020 with the museum remaining open.

It was reported the theater had been operating at a loss because it was still using IMAX film, which cost $20,000 a print added to an $80,000 maintenance contract.

The Fort Worth Report said In June 2021 plans were to open with IMAX digital in late-2022 or early 2023, making the theater less deep with an increase in seating.

Curious to know how if you take away space you can have more seating.
