Costing 21,000 pounds, the twenty ton Wurlitzer arrived in port late November 1927, and was transported by six trucks to the Regent. On 29th December, U.S. theater organist (recently at the Paramount NYC) Samuel Mensch, and his wife, sailed into Sydney under a six month contract with Hoyts to play at their new venue. Newspaper reports until 8th January made reference to the fact that Mensch had fallen in love with the city - but he was never mentioned again. Another American organist Roy Devaney, and his family, arrived by ship on 9th February 1928, with news that he had been appointed to the Regent. Devaney would spend several months as the Regent’s inaugural organist. He remained with Hoyts in Australia for a year, moving to the Perth Regent in August, then to the Melbourne DeLuxe.
