Thomas A.J. Shimmens & Son opened their New Theatre, a 403-seat venue that played both vaudeville and movies. It launched on October 7, 1939. The theatre was operational just three days a week. The theatre took on the name of the Novo Theatre thereafter and the same operator also ran the State Theatre in town. The Novo Theatre continued at least until 1957.
