Scala Cinema

In the small town of Rhymney, in the county borough of Caerphilly, South Wales, the Scala Cinema does not appear to have featured in the Kinematograph Year Books, so I have been unable to compile anything approaching a comprehensive history.

Architecturally, the frontage appears to date from the very early days of the silent screen.

A few on-line reminiscences recall happy days at the Scala Cinema in the 1950’s and 1960’s. One contributor recalled that the final film was Doris Day in “The Glass Bottom Boat”. However, even this is in doubt, as that film was released in early-1966, while a photograph in the Cinema Theatre Association Archive shows the Scala Cinema advertising Ken Loach’s “Kes”, which was released in May 1969, and Disney’s “Wild Country”, which was released even later, in February 1971. (The second photograph I have located was copied from a book. It is dated 1967 but, unfortunately, it is not very clear.) So it is not known when the Scala Cinema closed.

By May 2008, when I first made enquiries, the building had been demolished. The auditorium was situated behind the High Street, while the narrow site of the foyer has been, since July 2016, at least, an open space between the Golden Fry fish and chip shop and Rhymney Pharmacy.

Hopefully, another contributor will be able to add to this very incomplete record.
