The Crystal Theatre was opened November 3, 1909 in downtown Madison by H.C. Haskins. Equipped with an electronic piano, the theatre opened with motion pictures and live vaudeville. It challenged the 15-year old Madison Opera House that had previously dipped its toes into motion pictures.
In 1918, the Crystal Theatre landed the exclusive Triangle Film Corporation contract and changed names to the Triangle Theatre in 1918. When the Triangle Theatre contract lapsed, the venue reverted to the Crystal Theatre moniker in 1919. The theatre appears to have closed following shows on February 15, 1922 with Charles Ray in “Cactus Crandall”.
On March 1, 1922, the theatre equipment was sold off. The theatre was retrofitted as a retail store and then it became a long-running drug store.
