Workmen's Hall

Located in the mining village of Penrhiwceiber, south of Mountain Ash, Glamorganshire. The Workmen’s-Hall was opened in 1888. It was built for the coal miners to use and featured a reading room and billiard room in the basement. The main concert hall was used for entertainments, lectures and public meetings. In 1908 a projection box was built on the front of the façade, and it began screening films. Around 1930 it was equipped with a RCA sound system and the first ‘talkie’ to be screened was “The Love Parade” starring Maurice Chevalier & Jeannette MacDonald.

The Workmen’s-Hall Cinema was closed in the 1980’s and it continued as a community centre. In March 2003 it was designated a Grade II Listed building. In 2011 the Ceiber Film Festival was held in the hall when 15-films with a Welsh interest were screened.
