Wigwam Theatre

The 1908 Sanborn shows a ‘5¢ Theatre’ operating in the ground floor of the Sims Block, a two story brick building with a tin front that dated to sometime before 1888. The Red Men’s Hall was on the second floor, and the space had been a hardware store in 1902.

This early operation did not last long, and by 1916 the map shows the space as a grocery. The building today is a bit worn, but still occupied by a mortgage office.

The Billboard of February 20, 1909 mentions a theater in Martinsville called the New Wigwam, showing movies and vaudeville. It doesn’t give a location, but Wigwam would be a likely name for a theater on the ground floor of the Red Men’s Hall. The Improved Order of Red Men fraternal organization called its lodges Wigwams.
