Known as the home of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the Cinema Center opening was celebrated September 29, 2011.
BIFF opened its 25th year in October 2020 with 192 films from 68 countries. Even with the cinemas operating at 25 percent capacity due to Covid-19, 18,311 people attended the showings. In 2019, a normal year, there were 189,000 ticket holders.
Not just open during the film festival, the cinemas have a well rounded schedule of international films all year long.
The complex, known as the largest cantilevered structure in the world, was designed by the Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, founded by Wolf D. Prix. It consists of a multifunctional 1,000 seat theatre, three cinemas seating 600, and a 4,000 seat outdoor cinema.
