Stadium Cinema II

The Stadium Cinema II opened three years after the Stadium Cinema I and a block west of its sister theatre. It was located on the first level of the Stadium Garage West. It was larger than its sister theatre and had a larger lobby. This was the first theatre in St. Louis to have computerized ticketing.

The Stadium Cinema II opened February 4, 1970 and seated 672. The Stadium Cinema II ran “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” for six months. The theatre closed as part of the Arthur Theatre bankruptcy.

Shortly after the Stadium Cinema II closed, it was converted into Mike Shannon’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant, owned by the St. Louis baseball player and now announcer Mike Shannon.

As I recall, the Stadium Cinema I and II were taken over by Wehrenberg after the Arthur bankruptcy. I saw movies at both theatres as recently as 1983.

Stadium II opened in February 1970 and closed in June 1984.

The space is now occupied by a Hooter’s Restaurant. Indeed, Wehrenberg operated it the final years.

I mentioned a few of the notable films I saw at the Stadium 1 on it’s page…a few I saw at Stadium 2 were “Which Way is Up?”, “Nice Dreams”, “Bingo Long”, and a double feature of “Fists of Fury” and “The Chinese Connection” very late in the life of the theater (I had usually seen these Bruce Lee films several times in the 70’s at the Lowe’s State). I guess the Stadium 2 was aimed more at the urban crowd than the Stadium 1 was…
