Picture House

In Ramsgate, Kent, the Picture House was built on the site of some shops and an auctioneers. It opened on March 25, 1920.

In February 1935 the owner, Ramsgate Picture House Ltd, went into liquidation, and the Balexcro Group, which operated other cinemas in the town, stepped in.

The Picture House was closed between September 1940 and August 1943, but then lasted until 4th October 1958, when it closed “for the season”.

It never re-opened, however, because the then-owner, Highlands Development Trust Company Ltd, sold the building to Tesco. Later on, it was home to a Superdrug store.

At some time the frontage was modernised, but the auditorium, with its decorative ceiling, remains. It is being used as a warehouse by Thanet Bedz, whose store occupies the street frontage.
