Plaza Cinema

Located in Birtley, 4 miles south of Gateshead, County Durham. The Plaza Cinema was opened in September 1938. It had a 35ft wide proscenium and a small stage. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. In the mid-1950’s it was equipped with CinemaScope.

In the mid-1960’s it became a part-time bingo club with films on other nights. Films ceased in 1967 and it became a full-time bingo club. The closed in the late-1990’s.
