Ira Crain operator or the Woods Theatre and manager of the Bonham Theatre created the Jack Rabbit Drive-In on the site of the present-day McDonald’s in Fairbury. Launching with a permanent screen on April 29, 1951 with Red Skelton and Lucille Ball in “The Fuller Brush Man” supported by the 3 Stooges in “His Baiting Beauty” along with a cartoon.
The RCA Sound System and DeVry Projectors were on a portable truck and originally designed to operate in two cities. However, Crain dropped that idea and operated six days a week in Fairbury. The theatre added 100 seats to become akin to an airdome / walk-in and drive-in theatre hybrid. The concept closed at the end of season - its only season.

Operator Ira Crain said the 1951 drive-in season was plagued with constant rain. He opened the Woods Theatre at the end of the Jack Rabbit’s first season and decided to stick only with the Woods Theatre. - likely moving the Jack Rabbit projection and sound equipment to the Woods for good instead of operating part year with the indoor and outdoor screens as had been planned.
