Downtown Eureka had two early Nickelodeons in 1900’s in the show-store era of movies. They were both replaced by new-build movie theatres, the first one built was the Crescent Theatre. It opened with movies and vaudeville on October 2, 1910. The new Star Theatre opened in 1914 (and has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The Star Theatre would experiment with sound films but the Crescent Theatre decided to stay silent. That proved to be the wrong move as the Crescent Theatre ended films with exploitation fare in 1928. The Crescent Theatre switched to live events, mostly boxing until 1940 last the end of a 30-year lease. Norman-Jensen store took over the Crescent Theatre briefly before moving on to a larger location.
