The City of McHenry’s first vaudeville, special events, and movie theatre opening takes place back on December 27, 1904 when the Central Opera House (also known as the McHenry Opera House) opened, according to the McHenry Plaindealer and was owned and operated by J.W. Smith.

It is closed in the fall of 1925 as a movie house and performing arts theatre and later on, the stage, dressing rooms and the balconies were then converted into an office space. It was destroyed by fire in 2012.
