The Utzscheneider block was built between 1809 and 1812 as a retail building in Furstenweg Strasse (renamed Brienner Strasse in 1826). In 1929, the building was modernized and the new owner, Alexander Schalk, had a cinema built in, which at the time was the largest in Munich. The cinema had 1,368 seats, ultra modern film sound and a Wurlitzer organ.
On the night of December 18, 1944, a 45 minutes bombardment by the Allied forces during World War II, forced the theater to close. It stood closed until September 1945 when it reopened. The theater operated until 1974 when dwindled patronage forced the cinema to close for good. The building still stands as a retail centre.
